Sharing Favorites, Book Binding & Final Reading: Day 5 of the 2025 Young Writers’ Workshop

5 days of hard work, 5 days of creative expressions… and we’re done!!!

It rained showers of creativity today at the UMB hall of the Beach Museum! Friends and families of our creative writers, faculty of the English department, and other friends all gathered to experience the fruit of our young writers’ diligent work all through the week.

But first, we began the day with book-binding! You all know that the final destination of every creative piece is to an audience; and writers would do well to package their works either digitally or in print!

Bookbinding

Carolyn Jackson, associate professor and Librarian at K-State, took us through an immersive book binding session. We saw generations of books! I bet we saw books older than you🫡!

Carolyn showed  us various techniques, our young writers bound a book and started off on creating a foldable box!

After that, we had lunch, and our writers went over their creative works in preparation for their big moment.

Grand- Finale!

The Reading began with an opening by our Director, Dr. Payne. She commended the staff for their contributions and hard work during the week’s workshop and thanked the young writers for their excellent participation.

Then it was time! Each instructor introduced the young writers in their groups, highlighting the uniqueness of each young writer. Here’s a sneak-peek:

Humble and Heroic Harrison

Humane, the hilarious, and high-spirited Holly!

Mayonnaise, Matthew! (If you know, you know, ha-ha😅😂)

Meticulous Miracle

Radiant Raina

Talented Tehillah

Joyful Jayme

The room was ablaze with various creative expressions. Our writers did not hold back- they dished out with so much enthusiasm that one of our guests said at the end: “like vampires, it was as though they injected me with their energy!”

No doubt, our young writers treated us to a taste of their abundant creativity!

Everything that has a beginning must surely come to an end! After such a delightful experience, we closed out with light refreshments and tete-a-tete.

We are so glad that our young writers had such productive experience! We are immensely grateful to our donors, the staff and faculty of the English department, and especially our department head, Dr Westman for making this experience possible for us!

Would we do this again? Yes, yes and yes! Watch out for our young writers’ creative expressions!!
